The fire at the top of the foothill there, on the right, is starting to burn close to the ranch. Smoke wafted down into town. Everything smelled like campfire. About two hours north of here, 80,000 acres are burning. Three hours south, there’s another fire. Last I checked, there were about 17 fires going. Add the record breaking heat to the mix and Colorado is beginning to feel a bit like Hell. This is nature. There was a huge fire up on Shadow Mountain back in the 70s. I remember, as a kid, riding around in my dad’s truck up there, some 15, 20 years later, and marveling at the devastation. Whole swaths of mountain side that use to be forest, gray. Like God scraped it clean with a palette knife to the pencil sketch below.
